"The Exception" is a 2016 British-American romantic drama film directed by David Leveaux, starring Jai Courtney, Christopher Plummer, Lily James, and Eddie Marsan. The film is based on Alan Judd’s novel "The Kaiser’s Last Kiss". 

The plot is as follow. Holland 1940. The Nazis are rampaging through Europe. The British have retreated from Dunkirk. The last German Kaiser, now an old man, has been living in exile in a big old house in the Dutch countryside for 25 years, chopping logs and reading PG Wodehouse. Into this world comes a young German officer (Jai Courtney), sent to stop the old man from defecting to England, but falls for a young Jewish Dutch woman (Lily James) during his investigation. Add a beautiful and mysterious Dutch maid and a British spy and the stage is set for a gripping spy thriller and love story, all of which comes to a head with a visit from Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan), head of the SS.

In his review, Piers Handling, Tiff's journalist, tell us that this is historical recreation at its finest. Plummer delivers a shaded and majestic performance that is beautifully complemented by McTeer's work, while James and Courtney shine. But it is impossible to resist Eddie Marsan as Himmler. He conveys the cold core of the man whose evident evil stands in stark contrast to the aristocratic manners of the fallen Kaiser.

"The Exception" was selected to be screened in the Special Presentations section at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. In October 2016, A24 and DirecTV Cinema acquired U.S distribution rights to the film.
