The first combat use of the Tiger II was by the 1st Company of the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion (s.H.Pz.Abt. 503) during the Battle of Normandy, opposing Operation Atlantic between Troarn and Demouville on 18 July 1944. Many German tank commanders showed exceptional abilities when confronting allied armor. Sure, technology may appear to be the answer, but it is the man in the machine that make the difference. A King Tiger could dispatch any modern tank if it were in capable hands and utilized properly.
472 of them were build. Most operated on the Eastern Front though, due to the large open ground. In the West they were limited by the sheer amount of river crossing bridges not able to support 72 ton and by the fact, that tank warfare in the West was at closer ranges and the Allies had complete air superiority. Even during the Ardennes Offensive they were only used for securing the flanks. The Panther and StuGs were the real work horses.
Tiger was the number 1 tank of all times. The very name Tiger put blind fear into the allied armies. The Russian's British and the AMERICAS best defense against the tigers tanks were to send 12 tanks and thetiger would destroy 10 before the last 2 could get a shot at the rear of the Tiger.
