Number Ten.- The Battle of Iwo Jima (February 1845 to March 1945)

  • A bloody battle of attrition that saw around 22,000 Japanese soldiers die. American victory secured an important air base.

Number Nine.- The Battle of Kursk (July 1943 to August 1943)

  • The biggest tank battle in history. Resulted in a decisive Soviet victory over German forces.

  • A decisive victory for the U.S. Navy and seen as turning point in the Pacific. Severely reduced Japanese naval might.

Number Four.- The Siege of Leningrad (September 1941 to January 1944)

  • The Axis encirclement lasted 872 days and cost 653,000 lives in 1942 alone. The city never fell into German hands.

Number Three.- The Battle of Britain (10th July to 31st October 1940)

  • RAF pilots manage to fight of the German Luftwaffe. Victory helps prevent the invasion of Britain

Number Two.- The Battle of Stalingrad (July 1942 to February 1943)

  • Crucial Soviet victory that checked the German advance into the USSR. Combined military and civilian casualties were nearly 2 million.

  • D-Day was history’s largest amphibious invasion Allied success in Normandy was the beginning end of Nazi power in Western Europe
