When U.S. Marine PFC John Pomnieky was a World War II prisoner of war in Japan, he dutifully wrote home to his father in suburban Detroit. He also marked the time by carving the name of each POW camp where he was interned after he was sent to Japan from the Philippines on a Hell ship when American troops surrendered on Corregidor in 1942. He was moved from one camp to another, where he was forced to work in copper and coal mines...
