German Scharnhorst Battlecruiser was one of the most powerfull capital ships afloat at that time. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau (her sister) operated together for much of the early portion of World War 2, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping.

Although cooped up for the most of the war, the Scharnhost and sister ship represented a major problem to allied shipping and finally in 1943 the Scharnhost joined the Tirpitz and the Lutzow in Norway which caused the suspension of the Artic convoys.

In late December 1943 the Scharnhost was detected by the Belfast and The Duke of York who fired on her and she was sunk with only very few crew surviving.
