Formed in 2005, Großdeutschland Aufklärungs aims to portray, as accurately as possible, the men of the reconnaissance section within the famous Grossdeutschland Division that fought exclusively on the Eastern Front during World War II.
Over the years the group has worked hard to try and achieve high standards in terms of our uniforms and equipment, living history displays and battle re-enactments. We pride ourselves on our hard earned reputation, the knowledge of our membership, our photography and also the research articles written by group members which appear in our bi-monthly unit newsletter and on this website.
Members from all walks of life and professions join the group and for a variety of reasons; some have a keen historical interest in WWII; others come with an interest in collecting militaria; for some it's their interest in the weapons and tactics used and others join for the camaraderie that the unit provides. Whatever the reason, our main aim is to share knowledge and research about the conflict and the soldiers that fought in it with both our membership and the general public.
The past few years have seen big changes for us, and we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to add vehicles to our inventory. Our aim to faithfully portray 'the eyes and ears of the Army' has been enhanced by four motorbike and side car combinations and also a faithful reproduction of an Sd.Kfz.222 armoured car. 2015 will see the debut of more reconnaissance vehicles in the form of an Sd.Kfz.223 (Fu) radio car, an Sd.Kfz.247b command vehicle and a Stoewer Typ 40 Kfz.1 jeep.
As you will see from the pictures on our site we attend many varied events throughout the season, from tactical battle weekends, to public displays and have also taken part in TV, film and magazine work as extras.
Senior members are keen to help settle new recruits into both the hobby and the group and take great satisfaction in seeing them develop into valued members with the potential to climb the ranks and ultimately become NCOs leading a squad of their own. We also work closely with the top outfitters in the UK and Europe to ensure that the high standards of dress and presentation that we set ourselves are maintained from the top to the bottom of the group.
We are one of the few groups in the UK to be Independent of Associations which gives us more power to control how we run our affairs and are covered by our own PLI insurances policy. We are always on the lookout for motivated recruits and vehicle owners with historical knowledge and a genuine interest in WWII and especially ‘Grossdeutschland’ and the war from the perspective of the Eastern front, so if you have any questions or are interested in joining come along to one of our shows and see us for a chat.
