Encuentran filme perdido de Benito Mussolini como actor

Giuliana Muscio, una estudiosa italiana de cine, encontró en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York (MoMA) dos bobinas con lo que queda de una película del 1923 en el que Benito Mussolini figura como actor, film que será presentado en las Jornadas del cine mudo de Pordenone. 

La película, dirigida por George Fitzmaurice y producida por Samuel Goldwyn, está basada en un guión adaptado de la novela de Hall Cain, The Eternal City, que ya había sido utilizada para otras películas y espectáculos de teatro. 

El filme, que refleja el interés de los norteamericanos por el fascismo, cuenta con la presencia del "Duce" italiano, quien en ese momento tenía 39 años. 

El interés por la película radica precisamente en el hecho de que se trata de una obra claramente pro-fascismo, en la que Mussolini viene no solamente indicado como el "hombre de la Providencia" sino que representa al personaje gracias al cual la película tiene un final feliz. 

En la escena en la que aparece, el "Duce" está muy complacido de sí mismo y del rol que recita. Las imágenes fueron rodadas en el verano del 1923, meses después de la "marcha sobre Roma" que le abrió el camino al poder en Italia. 

La película marca además el comienzo del largo amor que el dictador italiano sintió hacia el cine, medio del que entendió enseguida la enorme potencialidad de propaganda. 

The Eternal City era considerada una película perdida pero el MoMA de New York tiene dos bobinas del film que han sido encontradas y examinadas por Giuliana Muscio, quien a su vez se puso luego en contacto con los organizadores del festival de Pordenone. Las dos bobinas fueron volcadas a una versión digital gracias al Rotary Club de esa ciudad. 

Lionel Barrymore, que en el film interpreta a un "comunista malo" llamado Bonelli, recordó que Mussolini estaba "todo el tiempo en el set cinematográfico".  

En un comentario hecho en 1941 a la reina de los rumores del cine de la época, Louella Parsons, Barrymore comentó: "lo conocí y no estaba mal. Jamás debería haberse metido en esa trampa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial", dijo.
