Crítica de "Corazones de hierro (Fury)" por Concepción Moreno

La guerra es el infierno. No se deje engañar por el título, no hay nada inspirador ni noble en esta película, sólo guerra, lodo, sangre y un retrato realista de la SGM. Decir que la guerra es el infierno es un lugar común. ¿Qué es realmente la guerra? ¿Qué podemos saber de la guerra los que siempre hemos vivido la plácida vida de los civiles?

El cine de guerra ha repetido de cientos de maneras la misma fórmula: soldados endurecidos a fuerza de la muerte de sus hermanos de armas, y atestiguar otros horrores como ver cuerpos destripados a granadazos, etcétera, pero esos soldados de algún modo salen ennoblecidos por la guerra, hechos hombres, más sabios: el heroísmo bélico más romántico sobrevive en la pantalla. La guerra no se ve tan infernal cuando la destrucción y la violencia van acompañadas de épica y camaradería.

No sucede así en Corazones de hierro (Fury) de David Ayer. Que no lo engañe el título en español, no hay nada inspirador ni noble en esta cinta de guerra, posiblemente una de las más angustiantes y sobrecogedoras de la historia. No se sale con el corazón de hierro, no, sino encogido, hecho polvo.

Wardaddy

Son los últimos días de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (SGM) en Europa; que sean la postrimerías de la Guerra no significa que el asunto esté zanjado. El régimen nazi lanza sus últimas defensas desesperado, poniendo uniformes y armas en las manos de los niños de las Juventudes Hitlerianas, emprendiendo ataques suicidas contra las fuerzas aliadas. Los soldados encuentran en Alemania cada vez más señales de violencia fanática, absolutamente irracional: niños ahorcados porque se negaron a tomar las armas, soldados de la SS que queman los pueblos de los que huyen, en fin.

Don Wardaddy Collier (un Brad Pitt, un tipo que parece al mismo tiempo agotado e imbatible) es líder de un grupo de soldados estadounidenses que conduce un tanque de guerra, el Fury.

Wardaddy y su gente (Shia LaBeouf, Michael Peña y Jon Bernthal) han sobrevivido juntos durante cientos de batallas: empezaron matando alemanes en África y ahora están matando alemanes en Alemania. “Y todavía falta mucha gente por morir”, dice Wardaddy.

Por supuesto, Collier detesta a los alemanes y no siente ningún cariño humanista por ellos: los mata por oficio y por convicción.

No toda la humanidad ha abandonado al veterano, tiene debilidad por los caballos. Uno de sus hombres narra que, después del día D, Wardaddy hizo sacrificar por piedad a los caballos heridos de los oficiales nazis.

Wardaddy podría ser un cliché más del cine bélico, otra vez el héroe endurecido y paternal con sus hombres. Pero no: Wardaddy tiene miedo. De vez en cuando debe alejarse de sus hombres para entregarse a la desesperación. Pitt retrata en esos minutos el terror del hombre que ha estado en manos de la muerte varias veces.

Al equipo de Wardaddy llega un soldado novato, Norman (Logan Lerman, excelente como contrapunto de Pitt), un adolescente que ni siquiera sabe disparar un arma, no digamos operar un tanque de guerra. Al principio se resiste a matar, pero Wardaddy lo hace ejecutar a un prisionero. Después Norman va viviendo cada vez más episodios violentos que lo van endureciendo hasta que comienza a disfrutar de matar nazis.

Corazones de hierro no tiene una trama grandiosa, de epopeya, es más bien una colección de episodios violentos vividos por la gente del Fury durante un par de días.

David Ayer, el director, buscó el mayor realismo, no sólo en los efectos de guerra sino también en la psicología de los personajes. La guerra es el infierno y convierte hasta a los hombres más tiernos en monstruos homicidas. Pero la guerra también es una necesidad: “Los ideales son pacíficos”, le dice Wardaddy a Norman. “La historia es violenta”.

La guerra es el ángel de la muerte de la historia.
