Conmemoran 70º aniversario de Batalla de Ardenas

En medio de una nevada, estadounidenses y belgas se reunieron el sábado en la región de las Ardenas en Bélgica para conmemorar el 70mo aniversario de uno de los enfrentamientos más extensos y sangrientos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Jean-Claude Klepper, de 62 años y residente de Virton, Bélgica, y su hija de 15 años Aurelie se vistieron como soldados estadounidenses de esa guerra para conmemorar la Batalla de las Ardenas.

"No debemos olvidar nunca lo que ocurrió en 1944", dijo el padre Klepper a The Associated Press. "Muchos soldados estadounidenses vinieron aquí a defender Europa. Debemos honrarlos por lo que hicieron".

Stephen Sams, de 41 años, un soldado de Estados Unidos emplazado en Alemania, dijo que para él la batalla emprendida en los densos bosques y estrechos valles de Bélgica y el vecino Luxemburgo encarnó "la renuencia de las fuerzas estadounidenses a rendirse ante la adversidad".

A partir del 16 de diciembre de 1944, y durante casi seis semanas, más de 600.000 soldados estadounidenses, en combate bajo condiciones de congelación y a menudo hambre y agotamiento, participaron en esfuerzos desesperados para contener, y luego hacer retroceder, una contraofensiva alemana sorpresa ideada por Adolfo Hitler.

El primer ministro británico Winston Churchill aclamó el resultado final como una "victoria estadounidense famosa para siempre". Pero fue a un gran costo: 80.987 bajas estadounidenses, incluidos 10.276 muertos, 47.493 heridos y 23.218 desaparecidos, según la historia oficial del ejército de Estados Unidos.

Las bajas totales alemanas se calculan en 81.834, incluidos 12.652 muertos y 30.582 desaparecidos.

Tras el fin de la batalla, el 28 de enero de 1945, las fuerzas aliadas atacaron Alemania al unísono, lo que derivó en la rendición nazi y el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Europa.

En el poblado de Bastoña, donde el 101er Batallón Aerotransportado se mantuvo firme a pesar de haber quedado aislado y rodeado, tiendas y ventanas fueron adornadas el sábado con banderas estadounidenses y belgas. Un restaurante local colocó un dibujo de la bandera de Estados Unidos con el mensaje "Gracias".
