... David Baines MBE, a veteran of the Normandy campaign and President of the Normandy Veterans’ Association, said: “This new memorial will remind people, particularly the younger generation, what it was like in 1944 and how the occupation of Europe was put to an end.
“I am nearly 91 now and it does seem like a long time ago. At the age of 20, which I was at the time, you feel immortal. But now we are inclined to look back.”
Andrew Baud, spokesperson for the Royal British Legion, said: “It was an honour to welcome so many veterans of the Normandy campaign to the National Memorial Arboretum.
“We understand that this will be one of the last national events for the association before they retire their colours later this year.
“It was humbling to speak with many of the veterans. They spoke with candour about their often horrific experiences.”
Funds for the memorial were raised by the Spirit of Normandy Trust with the Normandy Veterans’ Association...
