This one is replica a Sd.Kfz.251/22, Ausf.D, built for the film 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'. It actually is the post war Czech OT-810 halftrack. This version had an air cooled diesel engine, and an armored roof over the troop compartment. The vehicle was not liked by those who used it and was nicknamed "Hitler's revenge".

Commonly referred to as the Pakwagen, the SdKfz 251/22 (7.5cm PaK40) Mittlere Schutzenpanzerwagen was a halftrack/anti-tank gun hybrid. It was a combination the lethal 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun with the ubiquitous Hanomag halftrack. It entered serial production in December 1944 on explicitly command of Hitler.

It was designed to fill a gap left due to not enough tanks or tank destroyers in the latter stages of the war. Another thought is that more mobile anti-tank weaponry was necessary to counter Soviet armoured thrusts. It gave German forces a highly mobile and very potent solution to enemy armour. The first Sd.Kfz 251/22 Pakwagen’s were delivered to four units in December 1944 – Grossdeutschland, 25th Panzer Division, 9th Panzer Division and 11th Panzer Division.

Sd.Kfz 251/22 Pakwagen was an effective weapon when used from ambush, especially in the traditional forward defence positions usually manned by reconnaissance units. The /22 had a fairly high silhouette. Firing at enemy armour was often delayed until the tanks were only 300 metres away, to ensure quick destruction of the targets. The Pak40 could, if was neccesary, engage armour at ranges of 1,500 metres or more. this greater range capability allowed more flexibility in positioning these anti-tank vehicles.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) is a war film directed by John Madden. It is based on the novel of the same name by author Louis de Bernières. The film pays homage to the thousands of Italian soldiers executed by German forces in Cephalonia in September 1943, and to the people of Cephalonia who were killed in the post-war earthquake. The novel's protagonists are portrayed by actors Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz.

This Replica (OT-810) comes with an authentic dismantled body for an Sdkfz 251 'D' model. This kit of parts will make it possible to build a very accurate copy of the Sdkfz 251/22 late war tank destroyer.
